SHADOW MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT & THE ACT

PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA · THE SENATE

Bolkus Wrong -Councils’ GST Administration "Minimal" The claim by Labor Senator Nick Bolkus that Councils will have to hire at least 1 or 2 extra staff to administer the GST is not based on any factual evidence.

Shadow Minister for Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, said today that Senator Bolkus' outburst was at odds with impartial Local Government opinion that, while the savings to Councils from Fightback! were enormous, the administrative burden was minimal.

“An analysis by the Municipal Association of Victoria found that the savings for Councils from the abolition of Fuel Tax and Payroll Tax alone amount to an effective 11.5% increase in Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grants to Local Government in Victoria."

"At the same time, the M.A.V. found the administrative costs involved in councils running GST, according to external expert advice, appears to be minimal."

"Try as Senator Bolkus and the Labor Party will to whip up fear in the community with mis-information about the GST, they cant escape the fact that Councils will be better off under a Hewson Government."

"Senator Bolkus' off the cuff comment yesterday is simply an effort to divert attention away from the enormous benefits for Councils which will flow from the Fightback! policies."

"It is somehow fitting that Senator Bolkus should use the launch of a bigger and thirstier Labor Tax Office in Brisbane to display his ignorance about the Coalition's policies to fix the tax system."
