PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT ON THAI SITUATION

The Federal Opposition welcomes the Prime Minister's statement today on the recent violence in Thailand. As Senator Hill, Mr Fischer and I indicated in our statements this morning, we share his horror and revulsion at the needless loss of life.

We also welcome the fact that the Australian Government has conveyed its deep concern to the Thai Government, as we called for this morning.

We are puzzled, however, that Australia's concerns were conveyed at a Deputy Secretary level in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade rather than at a Ministerial level. We believe that, given the seriousness of our concerns, it would have been more appropriate for the Acting Minister, Mr Kerin, to have put the Governnment's concerns directly to the Thai Ambassador.

We note that, as the situation in Thailand develops, the

Australian Government will be "looking at our relations with Thailand". The Opposition will be closely monitoring that review process.
