KEATING DUCKS FLAG VOTE

The Prime Minister said today that he welcomed a healthy debate on the flag. Despite that claim, he gagged in the Parliament the very debate he said we had to have.

The Motion I attempted to put was very simple and direct:

"That this House expresses its firm and unswerving support for the current Australian national flag."

Politics in this country has come to a low state, indeed, when a Prime Minsiter will refuse to let the Parliament express its support for its own national flag.

The Prime Minister knows that he is out of his depth. He is

backing off this issue as much as he can.

He is invoking all his old hollow nationalism. He is distorting our history. He is twisting and turning on technicalities. But none of this is helping him.

He knows that his own Backbenchers are nervous about how and why he has raised this issue. He won't even trust them with a vote on it in the Parliament because he knows that they have more sense than he does.

The Prime Minister has a simple challenge which he cannot escape - let the Parliament give its support to our national flag.
