DAVID Hawker : Federal M ember for Wannon Shadow Minister for Land Transport

M e d i a R e l e a s e

NO. PRIME MINISTER. WE'RE BETTER THAN YOU!

Transport will be dramatically cheaper under a Coalition Government. We'll be removing over $40,000 of Government taxes and charges from road transport operators.

Fightback! is fully funded. The money allocated to roads is already accounted for. That is, we don't need a road user charge to keep up the road effort.

Road funding will initially be funded out of Consolidated Revenue (as the Government does now). We will remove all the current Government's taxes and charges. Motorists will then pay GST on fuel, all of which will go to roads. Heavy vehicles will not pay GST on fuel, but will have a fair and equitable road user charge, all of which will go to roads.

In July, the National Farmers Federation released a report showing that even with road user charges, farmers would be between 7 and 22 per cent better off under the Coalition compared with the Government.

The Coalition will fund the Commonwealth's contribution to the road effort. Labor has never funded $4.3 billion on roads, nor does it ever intend to.

In fact, Labor's record on road funding is appalling. For all of its years in office, bar 1992-93 (it has to buy votes), road funding has fallen dramatically in real terms despite huge increases in the revenue gained through fuel excise (over 120%). The attached charts tell the whole story.

The Coalition will dramatically reduce the cost of motoring. Mr Keating's Government will continue to tax motorists blind. He would not let the States/Territories even consider reducing tax on motorists because he needs to keep taxing them to pay for his failures.

No, Prime Minister, we're not the same as you - we're so much better!
