Launch of national agreement on breast milk substitutes

Government, health and company representatives will attend the official signing of an agreement by manufacturers and importers for the marketing in Australia of infant formulas, which follows the adoption by this country of the World Health Organisation Code on the marketing of breast milk substitutes.

The code sets put obligations for suppliers of breast milk substitutes, bottles and teats, for health professionals and for governments and regulatory authorities.

Commonwealth Government representatives at the launch will be the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Housing and Community Services, Mr Brian Howe, and the Minister for Justice and Consumer Affairs, Senator

Michael Tate.

The Director of Neonatology at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Dr Neil Campbell, and a representative of the Nursing Mothers Association of Australia will also speak at the function
