MINISTER FOR INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS SENATOR PETER COOK

21 February 1992

NEW UNION FORMED ALONG INDUSTRY LINES

Six important Federal unions are merging to form a new union more appropriate to their industry, the Minister for Industrial Relations, Senator Peter Cook, said today.

Senator Cook has approved a grant of $225,000 towards the formation of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Workers Union of Australia (CFMEU).

'This will bring benefits for employees and employers', Senator Cook said.

'There will be a well resourced union for an estimated 135,000 building and construction and other workers to provide better services to its members. _

'Employers will benefit from having less unions to deal with at each workplace.

'The CFMEU has been specifically structured along industry lines.

'Unions structured in this way allow for better bargaining at each workplace. • \

'This grant will support union educational campaigns to promote the amalgamation of the CFMEU with Federated Engine Drivers and Firemens Association (FEDFA), Operative Plasters and Plaster Workers Federation of Australia (OPPFA), and Federated Furnishing Trades Society (FFTS).

'The grant was funded from the Commonwealth Government's union rationalisation program. ’

'This scheme, administered by the Department of Industrial Relations, funds such amalgamations along industry lines.

'The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Workers Union of Australia - now a legal entity - was formed from the former Australian Timber and Allied Industries Union (ATAIU) and Building Workers Industrial Union (BWIU), and United Mine Workers Federation of Australia (UMFA). The next stage of the

amalgamation which merges the FEDFA, the OPPWF, and the FFTS will complete the formation of the CFMEU', Senator Cook said.

The first National Council meeting of the CFMEU is being held today in Sydney.
