AAA AGAIN REVEALS TRUE COLOURS

The Minister for Land Transport today slammed the Australian Automobile Association for making misleading public comments about Federal road funding.

" The AAA had yet again revealed that it is prepared to mislead the public and that it was incapable of adding anything constructive to the discussion on road funding" Mr Brown said.

Mr Brown also said that the AAA were clearly shaping up to run a political campaign against the Government in the next election as they did in 1990. "They will no doubt use their members' funds to run a political campaign against this Government" Mr Brown said.

Mr Brown was responding to an AAA statement of 18 August which claimed that the Federal Government will reduce its commitment to the provision of an efficient and safe road system.

The AAA Secretary General, Mr Bruce Lunn, well knows that under the auspices of the Special Premiers Conference the Federal Government untied local roads funds to the tune of $350 million and has specifically agreed to hand back $350 million per annum to the States after 1993. Naturally these

figures are not reflected in the Government’s forward estimates of expenditure as specific road grants.

Mr Brown said that Mr Lunn' s organisation had been a strong supporter of this process which will give States increased resources to fund their road networks.

This Federal Government has committed an unparalleled $2 billion to road funding and road safety in 1992/93 and under its stewardship the Australian road toll has come down to an all-time low.

It is disappointing to me that an organisation such as the AAA, with its enormous resources, engages in blatant political posturing when it could be assisting governments in pursuit of improvements to our road system and road

safety.
