/&τ Bob BrownVu AUSTRALIA ./>Minister for Land Transport196/92 28 August 1992STUDY RECOMMENDS NEW NATIONAL HIGHWAY ROUTESA study commissioned by the Federal Government has identified preferred National Highway routes from Sydney to Adelaide and Melbourne to Brisbane. ~Releasing a summary report for public comment today, the Minister for Land Transport, Bob Brown, said that over the next two years the Federal Government would provide $138 million in One Nation funding for work on these routes. '’If the study's recommendations are adopted these additional routes will increase the length of the National Highway from approximately 16,000 kilometres to 18,400 kilometres', Mr Brown said. The study, carried out by the consortium of Travers Morgan, PPK Consultants and the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation, recommends routes along the likely future National Highway corridors.'These corridors were selected to meet National Highway objectives of improving the safety, reliability and efficiency of the movement of people and goods between the states, to and from the major export facilities, and improving access for traffic to major population centres', Mr Brown said. -' A large number of alternatives were identified within each corridor which could potentially serve National Highway objectives. After an analysis of road user costs, relating to distance and terrain, these were reduced to a small number for more detailed economic analysis before final recommendations were made.'The new routes will lengthen the National Highway which comprises the interstate network of trunk roads that link all the mainland capital cities as well as Hobart with Bumie and Brisbane with Cairns. The Federal Government fully funds the National Highway system', Mr Brown said. .The summary report is being distributed to relevant State Ministers and to other interested parties. Comments will be received until 11 September 1992. Following consideration of comments, Mr Brown will make a formal declaration of the routes selected as National Highways. S B
