Preamble for new Citizenship Pledge

Senator Michael Tate today released the text of a proposed preamble to be included in the Citizenship Act which will also incorporate the new Pledge of Commitment announced by the Prime Minister last week.

Senator Tate is Minister for Justice and Minister assisting the Minister for Immigration.

He said today the proposed preamble complemented the new Pledge, and emphasised the idea of citizenship being “the common bond which unites all Australians in our diversity”.

“It also emphasises the reciprocal rights and obligations which form the basis for a tolerant and law abiding community.

Senator Tate said he had been pleased with the reaction to the new Pledge.

“I believe it really speaks for many Australians who want to express their loyalty in a heartfelt and clear way.

“I am now sure that it will appeal to Australian children and teenagers who will learn it ‘off by heart’, just as people do with the declaration of loyalty in many other countries”.

Senator Tate said he would introduce the preamble and the new Pledge as amendments to the Citizenship Act as early as possible when Parliament resumes in late February.

The proposed text for the preamble is:

Recognising that: -Australian citizenship represents formal membership of the community of the Commonwealth of Australia; and Australian citizenship is a common bond involving reciprocal rights and obligations which unite all Australians, while respecting their diversity; and

Persons granted Australian citizenship enjoy these rights and accept these obligations by pledging their loyalty to Australia and its people, including pledging to share their democratic beliefs; and

to respect their rights and liberties; and to uphold and obey the laws of Australia.

From this time forward, (under God) I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.

The wording of the new Pledge announced by the Prime Minister on December 17 is:
