Appointment of Industrial Registrar

The Minister for Industrial Relations, Senator Peter Cook, announced today that Cabinet has recommended to the Governor-General the appointment of Ms Barbara Deegan as Industrial Registrar.

Ms Deegan, currently in charge of -the Legal Branch of the Department of Industrial Relations, is a qualified lawyer.

Ms Deegan has considerable experience in public administration, legal practice and industrial relations.

In 1991 and 1992 Ms Deegan was a member of the Australian delegation to the 78th and 79th International Labour Conferences held in Geneva.

As Industrial Registrar, Ms Deegan will be responsible for the Australian Industrial Registry, which supports the Australian Industrial Relations Commission throughout Australia.

Senator Cook said, "I welcome the recommended appointment of Barbara Deegan as the first female Industrial Registrar. Ms Deegan is well qualified for the position. I wish her well for her new duties.

"I would like to thank the former Industrial Registrar, Mr Jim O'Shea, for his outstanding work in establishing and managing the Registry since its inception in 1989. Mr O'Shea has recently been appointed as a Commissioner of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and Ms Deegan will

be a worthy successor."
