MPS 19/92 STUDENT VISA FEE RATIONALISATION

A standard processing fee of $130 will apply from July 1, 1992, for overseas students seeking visas to study in Australia.

The Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, Mr Gerry Hand, said today the change - as foreshadowed in January this year - would be welcomed as it replaced a two tier fee scale with a simpler and, for

some, a cheaper system.

The present fee arrangements for processing of applications is $230 for Category B (non-formal) students from non-gazetted countries and $100 for others.

Mr Hand said he believed the new fee structure would be welcomed by the ELICOS sector as it would allow more competitive marketing of courses.

The timing of the change follows consultations with the Minister for Employment, Education and Training, Mr Beazley, and with representatives of the education industry, and will allow a lead time for marketing of

1993 academic year courses.
