CONCESSIONAL CITIZENSHIP FEE FOR AGED VETERANS

The Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, Mr Gerry Hand, has announced that people receiving an age veteran's pension will be able to apply for the grant of Australian citizenship at the reduced rate of $20.

The concessions will apply with applications lodged from 25 June 1992.

Mr Hand said that recipients of a pension from the Department of Veterans' Affairs on the basis of age will now pay the same application fee as people receiving the Department of Social Security age pension.

Before today's announcement, veterans have paid a fee of $50.

He said that the pension paid to veterans on the grounds of age is a similar and alternative pension to the age pension, and the Government believed it fair that the fee concession should apply to both categories of people.

Mr Hand said the Government encouraged both new and old settlers to apply for citizenship.

He understood that people receiving an age pension may find it difficult to pay the full fee, but he hoped the concession would encourage all who where eligible to seek citizenship.
