OPPORTUNITIES FOR SA's LONG-TERM UNEMPLOYED

The appointment of 19 Jobskills Program brokers in South Australia to assist 675 long-term unemployed people was announced by the Minister for Higher Education and Employment Services, Peter Baldwin, today.

The Federal Government will spend more than $5 million in South Australia on the Jobskills Program over the next 12 months.

"Jobskills participants receive a training wage of $280 per week while they are involved in the employment training program," Mr Baldwin said.

"The brokers arrange 26-week work experience and training placements for participants. About 25 per cent of each participant's time is spent in formal off-the-job training and further 15 per cent in on-the-job.

"The program provides excellent training, broadens the experience and enhances the prospects of finding permanent work.

"The skills they learnt in the program can also equip people for further education or training."

Mr Baldwin said the Jobskills Program was directed at people over 21-years-of-age who had been registered as unemployed for 12-months or more and who were receiving Social Security benefits, or to the spouse of a long-term unemployed person registered as unemployed for one month or longer.

He said the Federal Government provided brokers with $3500 for each participant to assist with training, equipment, materials and worker's compensation costs.

The on-the-job placements will include positions with clerical workers, aged care attendants, child care attendants, gardeners, ground staff, computer operators, caterers, cleaners and timber workers.

The approved Jobskills brokers are:

• Aged Care Organisations • Campbelltown Shareskills
