In NSW the Commonwealth Employment Service places almost 500 people in jobs every day, the Minister for Higher Education and Employment Services, Peter Baldwin, announced today.

"14,037 people got jobs through the NSW CES dining September, taking the total for the September quarter to 39,093," Mr Baldwin said.

At a breakfast meeting of leading businesspeople in Sydney today, Mr Baldwin said many employers were unaware of the large subsidies and services the CES could provide to give their businesses a boost.

"This year the Federal Government will spend over $1.2 billion dollars on employment and training programs - many of which will assist employers as well as jobseekers.

Mr Baldwin said there was also a misconception amongst some employers that the CES only recruits junior staff or unskilled workers.

"This prevents them from taking full advantage of what's on offer," he said.

"The CES also caters for administrative, professional and management occupations. In all occuptions the CES can assist employers with:

* advertising vacancies, shortlisting applications and checking references * maintaining lists of specialists for immediate employment * providing valuable wage subsidies * temporary and short-term placements

"The CES is the biggest employment agency in Australia; and its programs are among the most comprehensive available in any OECD country.

Mr Baldwin urged employers to contact their nearest CES or Industry Service Centre for details on recruitment, subsidies, training and other assistance.
