$701,000 TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE WOMEN'S HEALTH SERVICES IN VICTORIA

The development of a booklet for women carers and a sexual assault information and resource kit for secondary schools are among 14 projects being funded under the second phase of the National Women's Health Program (NWHP) in Victoria.

The Federal Minister for Health, Housing and Community Services, Brian Howe, and the Victorian Minister for Health, Maureen Lyster, today announced details of the $701,570 package under the jointly funded program.

"This brings to $3.9 million the total funding for Victoria under the NWHP over the past year," they said.

Mr Howe said the NWHP recognised that women are the major consumers of health care services, both personally and as the primary carers in their families.

"This package contains important initiatives to improve access to health information and services for women in the role of carers and older women," he said.

"In particular, $60,000 has been allocated for the development and distribution of a resource booklet for women carers, and $110,000 will be used to develop and distribute an older women's health program guidelines module for use by health care agencies."

Mrs Lyster said the health needs of sexual assault victims and women from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) remained a high priority in this funding round.

"I was concerned that these two groups of women, both of them vulnerable and both with special health needs, should have access to the specialist attention that they deserve," she said.

"Funds will be used to enhance the standard of services provided by women's health services and sexual assault services through the development of information packages and in-service training for workers."

Two grants will be used to expand the Outer Eastern and North East Women's Health Services to meet the needs of NESB women, older women and women as carers in the region.

Funding has been made available to expand two existing services as well as 12 one-off grants to make general and specialist health services more responsive to women's health needs.

Projects to be funded include:

. a research study into the incidence and impact of sexual assault on women with psychiatric illness;

. a map of health services funded in Victoria under the NWHP; and

. the production and development of a comprehensive sexual assault information and resource kit for secondary school libraries in Victoria, with distribution planned for community libraries.
