ORDINATION AN HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR WOMEN - FATIN

The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women, Wendy Fatin, has welcomed the first ordination of women into the Anglican Church of Australia as an historic occasion for all Australian women.

Ms Fatin attended the ordination of 10 women today by the Anglican Archbishop of Perth, the Most Rev Peter Carnley, in Perth's St George's Cathedral.

"I was delighted to be able to celebrate with them in my home State," Ms Fatin said. .

"Women have waited so long and patiently to pursue a vocation in the church. I feel sure that their patience will soon be rewarded not only here in WA, but throughout the country.

"Women celebrating International Women's Day tomorrow (March 8) will have a.new and very real reason to rejoice."

Ms Fatin, who is in her electorate of Brand this weekend, will mark International Women's Day with the Prime Minister, Mr Keating, at a UNIFEM breakfast in Brisbane on Monday, morning.
