ATTORNEY-GENERAL THE HON. MICHAEL DUFFY MP

The Attorney-General, Mr Michael Duffy, today announced the appointment of five part-time members of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).

Professor James Lahore, Partner, Mallesons Stephen Jaques and Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne has been appointed from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 1995 to undertake work on the design reference. Professor Lahore has a world reputation as an .

expert in intellectual property law. From 1980 to 1986 he was Herchel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law, University of London and in 1991 he chaired a committee on Intellectual Property Protection for Industrial Designs in 1991 for the Minister for Industry,

Technology and Commerce.

Professor Bettina Cass, Professor of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Sydney and Professor Peter Baume, Professor of Community Medicine, University of New South Wales have been appointed from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 1995 to undertake work on the health, housing and community services reference. Both have extensive knowledge of policy development in this area.

Professor Rebecca Bailey-Harris, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Flinders University, and Justice Ian Coleman of the Family Court of Australia have been appointed from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 1995 to undertake work on intractable access. Professor Bailey-Harris has researched extensively in the field of family law and children’s rights. Justice Coleman has had extensive experience as a family law practitioner.

“Each of the five appointees is a recognised expert in their own field”, Mr Duffy said today. “They represent the wide range of expertise and talent within the community who are pleased to make their abilities available to the Law Reform Commission and to contribute to the work of law reform”.
