AUSTRALIAN ASSISTANCE TO PLAN NATIONAL PARK IN VIETNAM

The Minister for the Arts, Sport, the Environment and Territories, Mrs Ros Kelly, today announced that Australia would be assisting the Government of Vietnam in planning the future management of one of its national parks.

The Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service (ANPWS) will provide support to the project through its senior planning officer, David Phillips, joining a small ' team that will be responsible for preparing a plan of management for the Ba Vi

National Park, situated approximately 40km north-west of Hanoi. The 10 OOOha park is home to a small group of indigenous people as well as a number of endangered species. Mr Phillips' involvement in planning and management of Australian parks will bring valuable experience to the project.

"It is encouraging to see that Australian expertise in environmental management is being sought internationally, especially in our region", Mrs-Kelly said. "Previously ANPWS has provided planning expertise to Saudi Arabia and to Malaysia and I am sure that its involvement in these countries and now in Vietnam will contribute to Australia's already high profile in protecting the world environment."

ANPWS assistance in preparing the plan of management for Ba Vi National park was sought by the Association for Research and Environmental Aid Ltd, an Australian non-government organisation, after an approach from the Vietnamese Centre for Natural Resource Management and Environmental Studies and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Major funding for the project has been provided by the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau under the NGO Initiative. Mrs Kelly noted that the ANPWS will meet some of the costs associated with Mr Phillips' involvement with the project.
