The Minister for the Arts, Sport, the Environment and Territories, Ros Kelly today announced a number of new clean production initiatives to assist businesses reduce their waste.

“Australian businesses that introduce clean production methods will not only reduce pollution and waste, but also make our industries more competitive", Mrs Kelly said.

“Clean production is about introducing clever ways of doing things so that pollution and waste are not automatic by-products of industrial processes. Cleaner production demonstrates also, how thoughtful environmental practices can create both environmental and economic benefits for Australia".

In his Statement on the Environment, the Prime Minister allocated $3.1 million to assist selected companies in identifying opportunities for waste prevention. These companies will act as models of best environmental practice for wider industry. An eco-design program will also be established in five sample companies to promote designing for environmental performance. ■

Mrs Kelly highlighted, also, another initiative in the Prime Minister's Environment Statement designed to help both Australian industry and the environment.

"A National Environment Information Database is to be set up in cooperation with State and Territory Governments in the Commonwealth Environment Protection Agency (CEPA), at a cost of $1.6 million over four years.

"Not only will this assist Australian industry in knowing where to go to for information and assistance, but it will obviously help the expansion of the environment management industry in Australia:"

The database will enable the efficient transfer of technology, improve the competitiveness of the environment industry and assist, ultimately, in improving exports, employment opportunities, industry competitiveness and environmental performance.

"The database will provide an important stimulus for waste minimisation and the introduction of cleaner production practices", Mrs Kelly said.

Measures announced in the Prime Minister's Statement will allow all sectors in the Australian economy to make a contribution to a cleaner Australia."
