AWARD WINNING AUTHOR APPOINTED CHAIR OF LITERATURE BOARD OF THE AUSTRALIA COUNCIL

The Minister for the Arts and Territories, Wendy Fatin, today announced that the winner of The Age Book of the Year'Award, Canberra writer Marion Halligan, has been appointed Chair of the Literature Board of the Australia Council.

Ms Halligan's latest novel, "Lovers Knots", was announced Book of the Year in the fiction category in Melbourne today. Ms Halligans' work, which includes three novels, three collections of short stories and a book of essays, has been acclaimed both nationally and overseas.

Her appointment as Chair of the Literature Board is for three years.

Ms Halligan succeeds Dr Brian Matthews, who resigned as Chair in November to take up the position of Head of the Australian Studies Centre in London.

Ms Fatin also announced that NSW writer a n d .teacher Brian Castro, has been appointed a part-time member of the Literature Board for three years. Mr Castro has written extensively on multicultural themes and his work has been

translated into French and Chinese.

"I feel sure that Ms Halligan and Mr Castro will make valuable contributions to the work of the Literature Board," Ms Fatin said. ■

"Their experience in their respective fields of literature will be a great asset."
