CHECK OUT YOUR HEALTH

Australians must take greater control of their health through regular self assessment, good nutrition, exercise and stress management, the Federal Minister for Aged, Family and Health Services, Peter Staples, said today.

Mr Staples was speaking in Melbourne at the launch of Life. Be in it's, "Check it out" campaign.

"The Federal Government is encouraging good health through initiatives such as the new National Health Advancement Program which gives priority to areas such as national health goals and targets, nutrition, the environment and injury control," Mr Staples said.

He said that the "Check it out" campaign was a very positive step forward because it encouraged people to actively assess their own health status.

A calendar setting out a series of monthly health checks is a major part of the campaign. Stress, weight, food, fitness, blood pressure and sun protection are among the major areas covered.

"Above all we need to adopt a positive attitude to our health and be aware of the benefits of good nutrition, regular exercise and cancer and heart disease prevention," he said.

"The calendar and campaign will be important vehicles to encourage Australians to pursue a healthy life-style.

"With Christmas just around the corner, the release of this calendar is timely as it gives us well needed advice so that we can start the New Year on a healthy note."
