NO ZERO TARIFFS IN FIGHTBACK MARK 2!

The Australian Democrats today called on Dr Hewson to remove his zero tariff policies from the revamped 'Fightback' Mark 2.

"It took the Coalition's plunging polls to convince Dr Hewson that Australians would not accept new taxes like the GST on food and other necessities of life," Democrat Trade Spokesperson, Senator Sid Spindler, said today.

"However, if he is as concerned about the effects of the

recession on Australian families as he says he is, he should also revamp his- tariff and industry policies.

"The Government's milder version of the tariff's razor is dismantling Australia's manufacturing industries and destroying jobs at an ever-increasing rate.

"Car makers and metal industries generally, textile clothing and footwear industries, sugar cane growers and even some sections of the National Party have let it be known that our economy could not survive Dr Hewson's scorched earth policies.

"Dr Hewson should now admit that it is suicidal to open Australia to a flood of imports while other countries are protecting their jobs and tilting the playing field in favour of their industries.

"Mr Keating must surely regret that he didn't take the pre-budget advice for a pause in tariff cuts urged by Senators Button and Richardson and many others.

"A Hewson initiative in this direction would force Mr Keating to follow suit, providing Australia's manufacturing industries with the breathing space they need and many Australians with the jobs they can't do without," Senator Spindler concluded.
