DEMOCRATS MOVE TO DISALLOW AUSTUDY REGULATION

Senator Karin Sowada, Australian Democrats Education Spokesperson, today gave notice to disallow an AUSTUDY regulation that would charge students 20% on late repayment of AUSTUDY overpayments.

"A 20% interest rate is quite excessive and is out of line with current market rates", says Senator Sowada.

"The Act allows the Department to charge an interest rate, however, 20% is exorbitant when those expected to pay the charges are students whose average income is below the poverty line.

" It is an unrealistic financial burden which would make repayments exceptionally difficult for students.

"The role of AUSTUDY is to alleviate financial hardships not to add to them", concluded Senator Sowada.
