GAY DISCRIMINATION IN ARMED FORCES MUST STOP - DEMOCRATS

The Australian Democrats have called on the Government to act quickly and decisively to end discrimination against homosexual people in the armed forces.

Victorian Senator, Janet Powell, who has pursued this issue over many years said "Minister Bilney has given lip service to removing the ban on homosexuals but has allowed the defence forces' chiefs of staff to stall and now a backbench revolt has

begun".

"If Mr Bilney's stated position is firm Government policy then he must push forward with the much needed reform and back up the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission."

"The spurious 'arguments' put forward by the armed forces must be treated for what they are. They represent the last bastion of blatant sex discrimination in our society", Senator Powell concluded.
