SENATOR CHERYL KERNOT AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS, QLD

MEDIA RELEASE

Tuesday March 17 1992 PR 92\13B

WEAK RECOVERY WON'T HELP JOBLESS

The weak rise In Australia's GDP figures indicate the recovery will be slow and patchy according to the Australian Democrats.

Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Senator Cheryl Kernot said the 0.3% rise will do little to improve the country's record unemployment rate.

"The small increase shows the recovery, if it eventuates at all, will be far slower than the ridiculous forecasts of 4% a year the Prime Minister made in his One Nation' document," Senator Kernot said.

"Although technically the figures mean the end of the recession, I am sure a lot of families and unemployed people would dispute this."

"The Government should have done more to stimulate the economy and cut our ever growing dole queues,"

"The Government should be spending more on short term job creation which is a better investment than long term costs generated by the permanent unemployment of Australians.
