Green doughnut good, but hole's too big

The doughnut was good, but the hole's too big, Australian Democrats' leader Senator John Coulter said today in response to the Prime Minister's environment statement. .

He said the statement, which was essentially about water and soil, was clearly poll driven. .

"The Government has taken up popular causes (whales and world heritage), but ignored the big challenge which is to green the economy and create long lasting jobs," he said.

On clean manufacturing, alternate energy and sustainable forestry the statement was appalling.

Environmental policy has been kept on the fringes, with the statement's $150 million tag was less than one sixth the price of just one of the submarines under construction in Adelaide, Senator Coulter said.

Tomorrow the Democrat's will score the statement against The Green Benchmark they released last week;
