Australian Democrats Leader John Coulter today presents his pending Threatened Species bill to foreign diplomats (VIEWING ROOM 2,11 A.M.), urging worldwide action to save unique species in all countries.

"Australia has one of the worst records in the world of species extinction, with over 100 animals and nearly 1,000 species currently at risk," Senator Coulter will tell them. "I consider my bill, which provides for Australia-wide habitat protection, the most important species conservation legislation ever presented to the Federal Parliament."

The Democrats Leader, a veteran environmentalist, will remind diplomats from a score of major nations of the need for each country to protect its own unique species. "Each country has unique flora and fauna which is not only part of its own natural heritage but also the world's," the Senator said. "Species protection should therefore become

an international obligation."
