SENATOR JOCELYN NEWMAN LIBERAL SENATOR FOR TASMANIA

SHADOW MINISTER ASSISTING THE LEADER ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

HOW MUCH PROMPTING DOES THE ACTU NEED?

■ 1 - When the NSW Labor Council has shown the ACTU to be out-of-touch with the needs of women in the workplace - how much longer can the ACTU "hold out" on childcare assistance for Australia's working parents?

Se tor Jocelyn Newman's comments follow the ACTU's rejection of the NSW Labor Council's stance on childcare assistance.

""The ACTU's remedy is for Government-funded childcare centres and welfare fee relief - that is a troglodyte and socialist remedy.

""Beryl Ashe, of the NSW Labor Council, has asked why the union movement should think it had the right to prevent lower-paid workers access to the same tax breaks which had always been available to higher- paid workers on salary packages," Senator Newman said.

It is reported in NSW, for example, that enterprise-bargaining has given employees of the Environment Protection Authority the option of taking their pay as a package, with choices for the non-cash component including childcare costs, mortgage repayments, medical insurance, parking or education,

;

""Mu- Ashe says that cost reducing options for employees, whether for childcare or parking costs, should be looked at in enterprise-bargaining negotiations.

\ ""The Coalition's Industrial Relations policy enables individuals to negotiate agreements with their employer. These agreements will be suited to the particular needs of the employee at any given time of their life, for example, assistance with the need for childcare for parents with young children," Senator Newman said.
