Peter Reith

DEPUTY LEADER of the OPPOSITION PRESS RELEASE SHADOW TREASURER

DAWKINS GAFFE ON CHIFLEY

In his speech to the National Press Club today, the Treasurer, John Dawkins, used the memory of former Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, to support a speech about Labor's antiĀ protectionist credentials.

Indeed, Mr Chifley was a strong protectionist, as is confirmed by his 1951 election policy speech. Mr Chifley said:

"As far as Australian industries are concerned, Labor will maintain its policy of full tariff protection."

Mr Dawkins' speech contained another error when he said that the Fightback package would lead to higher interest rates.

According to the Treasury analysis, under Fightback! interest rates would be lower - not higher.
