Peter Reith

DEPUTY LEADER of the OPPOSITION PRESS RELEASE SHADOW TREASURER

THE RECESSION GONE ONE DAY HERE THE NEXT

The Prime Minister may believe the recession has long gone but along with the rest of Australia his ministerial colleagues aren't so sure.

Today in Question time at least three of the most senior members of Cabinet concluded the recession is still very real.

HOWE:

"We would not cut back $400m off public housing during a recession."

DAWKINS:

"... that does not mean that we have left behind all

of the problems which the recession created...it does not mean that we have resolved the question of

unemployment... it does not mean we have resolved the question of business failures."

BEAZLEY:

"Now that new schools policy gives stability to both schools both in the Government and private sector by ensuring that you don't willy-nilly create schools in areas where there already is substantial provision, particularly in a period of recession, particularly in

a period of recession..."
