SHADOW TREASURER

PRESS RELEASE

MORE SUPPORT FOR GST

I welcome the support for GST from the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr Tony Cole.

Mr Cole has publicly supported the GST before and his latest remarks - reported on the front page of The Courier Mail - to a private meeting of Brisbane business people, demonstrate again the general support for GST in Treasury.

The Government's propaganda unit will be hard at work to dismiss the comments because they reveal that privately the Government knows that the Fightback! package is beneficial for the economy but attacks it cynically for purely political purposes.

Mr Cole was apparently sensitive to this inconsistency because the reports states s

"He stressed that he was only considering the economic - and not the political - arguments ..."

He is reported to have said its main benefit was for exporters and it would encourage savings.

Boosting exports and lowering interest rates through higher savings will both create jobs.

For the same reasons, the business community has also continued to strongly support the package; for example, this weekend the ACCI and the head of FAI, Mr Rodney Adler, have both endorsed Fightback! tax reforms.

In private, Mr Cole is prepared to advocate policies in the public interest. As more Australians speak in favour of change for the better and repudiate the hypocrisy of the Government's scare campaign, perhaps we will see more of the bumbling and quivering lip performance we had from Mr Keating

last week.
