Dawkins misrepresents GST policy on charities

Peter Reith

In Question Time today the Treasurer deliberately misrepresented the Coalition's GST treatment of charities by claiming they will be taxed.

Unlike Labor the Coalition's Fightbackl package will reduce the taxes now being paid either directly or indirectly by charities.

The Coalition announced in Fightbackl that charities will be granted the most favourable GST treatment of zero-rating.

This treatment recognises the special role performed by charities and our commitment to ensuring their effectiveness in delivering services.

The Treasurer's distortion of Coalition policy is simply an attempt to divert attention from his incapacity to answer specific tax questions detailed in his own Budget.

In fact the Budget raises the prospect that the Government will extend the FBT system to capture organisations such as churches, St Vincent de Paul, the Sydney City Mission and other public benevolent organisations.
