ALEXANDER DOWNER — Member for Mayo, Shadow Minister for Trade & Trade Negotiations

LIVE SHEEP TRADE AND MR KERIN

The Federal Opposition expressed "great surprise" today at the announcement that the Minister for Trade, Mr Kerin, is to try to resolve the log jam in the live sheep trade during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

Shadow Minister for Trade, Alexander Downer, said today that Mr Kerin was the architect of the collapse of the live sheep trade with Saudi Arabia during his period as Minister for Primary Industry.

"For the Australian Government to send to Saudi Arabia the man who more than any single person has caused the rift is just

astonishing.

"Mr Kerin's previous visits to Saudi Arabia have been neither felicitous nor fruitful and he has totally failed to develop any close personal relationships in that country in the way Doug Anthony as Trade Minister did a decade a g o .

"Furthermore, Mr Kerin has always made it clear he has

reservations about the very existence of the live sheep trade".

Mr Downer said it would be far better if another Minister made the visit.

"Admittedly, the problem for the Labor Party is that none of the relevant Ministers have been in the slightest helpful on this issue.

"Senator Evans has made his opposition to the live sheep trade fairly apparent and Mr Crean - who is the only practical

Ministerial alternative - was no friend of the live sheep trade during his period as a trade union apparatchik".

Mr Downer said the government should use someone who has close personal associations with the Saudi Arabians such as Doug Anthony to clear the path for the resumption of the trade not recycle actors who have already been found wanting.
