NISSAN CLOSURE A GREAT TRAGEDY

The closure of Nissan's Australian vehicle production plant and the consequent loss of hundreds of jobs was tragic, the Shadow Minister for Industry and Commerce Ian McLachlan said today.

'These circumstances are all the more unfortunate because the Federal Government has totally failed to implement many of the critical reforms which might have given this Company a chance.

'The removal of $20 billion of the $36 billion of business taxes, reform of the labour market, and increased efficiencies in transport and communications would· have made a significant difference to the Nissan operations in Australia.

'Australian industry itself has demanded these changes unsuccessfully from the present Federal Government for a long time.

'Perhaps the Federal Government will learn from these unfortunate

circumstances that unless it gets on with these critical reforms, other significant Australian manufacturers may finally make the same decision.

'Nothing else can work,' Mr McLachlan said.
