AMECON REVELATIONS EXPLODE FEAR CAMPAIGN

The revelations by Amecon Chief Executive, Dr. John White, that the company had switched contracts for the Anzac Frigate Project to New Zealand because of the benefits from that country's labour market reforms could scarcely have been more embarrassing for the Prime Minister.

Mr Keating had just toured the Amecon dock-yard and heaped praise on the company.

The revelations have exploded all the dark scare tactics about the nature of industrial relations changes in New Zealand.

The bad news for Australia is that because the Government hasn't implemented sufficient industrial relations reforms we are becoming uncompetitive.

It is not the fault of the company's. The Government is to blame for not breaking trade union control of our industrial relations system and allowing genuine workplace bargaining.

The Government's own inadequate attempts to free the system have failed - even its new certified agreement provisions have been put in cold storage by the High Court.

The Amecon disclosure demonstrates Australia's dilemma.

It is one thing to find difficulties in competing with low wage nations like Indonesia or China.

It is entirely another to be beaten to the punch by a country like New Zealand whose standard of living is roughly comparable to our own.
