Philip Ruddock, Member for Dundas and Liberal Candidate for Berowra commented that he was pleased with the progress made in relation to the taxing of Italian pensions.

"Australian citizens of Italian origin who receive aged pensions from Italy will no longer need to pay tax to both the Italian and Australian Governments on this pension.

Under the present arrangements the Italian Government has been contravening the International Agreement between Italy and Australia. The Opposition, through Senator John Watson, raised this injustice in the Parliament's Question Time on a

number of occasions. As a result of this Australian Government taxation representatives met with the Italian Government in Rome and received an assurance from the Italian Government that it will rectify the situation promptly.

The Italian Director of Internal Relations, Dr Zeferino Petrecca has directed the Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale to cease deducting tax from these pensions. Tax will now only be payable in Australia."
