On Friday, 12 June, Federal Member for Dundas and Liberal Endorsed Candidate for Berowra, Philip Ruddock MP held a Public Meeting at the Beecroft Community Centre. This meeting was specifically focussed at how the Fightback! Package would affect our senior citizens. After very informed and stimulating debate, and with the assistance of our Guest Speaker, Senator Richard Alston, Shadow Minister for Superannuation and Child Care, the 70 or so people in attendance applauded loudly in support of the Fightback! plan.

Topics discussed at this meeting included the Tax Credit system, (to compensate self funded retirees for the GST), the pension, the Goods and Services Tax, Superannuation and lump sum payouts, proposed changes to the income tax system and the lowering of income tax, the abolition of Wholesale Sales Tax, fuel excise, and a whole range of other issues that directly related to Senior Citizens.

On Monday, 22 June, a luncheon was held at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club, hosted by Philip Ruddock on "The Coalition's Approach to Aged Care". The Guest Speaker on this occasion was Hon Jim Carlton, Shadow Minister for Aged Care. Mr Carlton spoke on the changing face of Australian society and the

different needs of our aged.

Under a Coalition Government, aged care would be given greater attention, in terms of not only established institutions but also a wider network of care in the home and self care facilities. Jim Carlton also spoke about the increase in the number of frail aged the need to continue providing for these people special

services. There were a number of local aged care organisations in attendance including Royal Ryde Rehabilitation Centre and Baptist Community Services.
