POLICY CONFIRMS CRITICISMS OF GOVT APPROACH TO POVERTY; HILL·

The Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Robert Hill, said the aid policy announced today by the Australian Council For Overseas Aid (ACFOA) confirmed Federal Opposition criticisms that the Australian Government's aid program ignored poverty.

"It's understandable that ACFOA's plan to attack poverty involves specific initiatives in the areas of children, women and the environment," Senator Hill said.

"Aid programs in these areas would go a long way to addressing world poverty.

"The Australian Government, however, has in recent years made only a token effort, in the key areas of women, children, health and the environment.

"ACFOA's emphasis on poverty in its policy confirms the

Coalition's criticisms that the Government has ignored poverty.

"The Opposition believes that Australian aid should be

concentrated in our region, and that more should be done to

target poverty.

"The Minister for Trade and Overseas Development, Mr Kerin, really is blind if he thinks ACFOA's policy represents only 'differences in emphasis' when compared with the Government's approach."
