MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR ROBERT HILL LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE SHADOW MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Wednesday, May 13 45/92

cnAI/TTIOW m u . CONSIDER s e n a t e i n q u i r y IHTO WA INC ISSUE I HILL

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Robert Hill, today said the Federal Opposition would seek a Senate inquiry into the Federal Government's withholding of tax

records to the WA Inc Royal Commission if the Government failed to provide convincing reasons for its decision.

"The Government's decision to withhold tax records from the WA Inc Royal Commission is disturbing," Senator Hill said.

"It is very much at odds with its willingness to provide tax records to previous inquiries, particularly the Fitzgerald Royal Commission in Queensland.

"The Opposition is very concerned that the Government's actions are hindering and delaying the work of the WA Inc Royal Commission.

"The Government must explain its apparent inconsistency and the decision of three successive Labor Treasurers not to allow tax records to be given to the WA Inc Royal Commission.

"If the Government fails to provide convincing reasons for its decision, the Opposition will move in the Senate for an inquiry into the issue.

"The Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs has previously looked at the issue of the provision of taxation records to law enforcement agencies and public inquiries.

"The Committee would be well-qualified to look at this latest issue as a matter of urgency.

"I have had preliminary discussions with the Australian Democrats Leader, Senator Coulter, who also supports a Parliamentary inquiry if it proves necessary to obtain the required information."
