HTT.T. T.RAVES POR CROATIA AND SLOVENIA AS PART OF EUROPE TRIP

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Robert Hill, leaves tomorrow for a trip to Europe which will include a visit to the new states of Croatia and Slovenia.

Senator Hill will first visit Geneva, where he will pursue issues of concern to the Federal Opposition regarding the Uruguay Round of the GATT. His talks with European officials will follow trade talks in Europe last year by Senator Hill

when he represented the Opposition on a bipartisan Australian Parliamentary delegation.

In Athens, Senator Hill will represent the Liberal Party of Australia at the executive meeting of the International Democrat Union (IDU) and a meeting of the IDU's Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. The meetings will focus on

issues arising out of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the changing international security environment. *

Senator Hill will be the first Australian Parliamentary leader to travel to Croatia and Slovenia since their recognition by Australia earlier this month. He will visit the Croatian capital, Zagreb, and the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana.

Senator Hill will explore ways in which Australia's

relationship with the two new states can be developed, particularly in the area of trade. He expects to look at matters arising out of the current ceasefire in Croatia,

humanitarian issues such as the return of refugees, and the most appropriate forms of Australian diplomatic representation in Croatia and Slovenia.
