FISCHER CONGRATULATES Q U EEN SLA N D NATIONALS

Backs call for a Joint Senate ticket Goss misses out on Wranslide

Speaking from his farm, Federal Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer MP, said today that Rob Borbidge and the Queensland State Nationals had achieved a strong result against the odds.

"The particularly strong vote for the Nationals' Marc Rowell in Hinchinbrook - where he defeated a sitting Labor Minister - is a very sweet result, along with Vince Lester's very good showing in Keppel based on North Rockhampton.

"Labor's Federal marginal seats of Kennedy, which includes all of Hinchinbrook, and Capricomia, which includes all of Keppel, are now top priority target seats, and are looking good for both Kennedy National Party candidate Bob Katter and Capricomia National Party candidate Margaret Goody respectively.

"Overall it is clear that Goss missed out cm a Wranslide as in the 1978 New South Wales State election, when Labor achieved a clean sweep - some polls last Sunday were predicting the decimation of the National and Liberal Parties in Queensland, but this was

clearly not the outcome.

Joint Senate

"I strongly support the call of the Queensland Nationals' State President, Mr Don McDonald, for a Joint Senate ticket between the Liberal and National Parties, if at all possible - this is, of course, a matter for the respective State organisations.

"A Joint Senate ticket would greatly boost the unity of effort and it must be acknowledged that we need to maximise cooperation, as in politics - disunity is death.

Mr Fischer added that there would be Joint Senate tickets in NSW and Victoria at the next Federal election, but amalgamation is not on his agenda. ends

P.S. In Hinchinbrook full page ads were taken out by Labor last week on the tariff issue. Even allowing for boundary changes in the area, it is a very big win by Mark Rowell, with great significance Federally in the seat of Kennedy.
