RELEASE * LEADER OF THE NATIONAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA SHADOW MINISTER FOR ENERGY AND RESOURCES MEMBER FOR FARREREnquiries Parliament House Canberra, A.C.T. 2600. Phone (06) 277 4058 Fax (06) 277 2052 THAI ELECTION RESULTS: A CAUTIOUS WELCOME.

Statement by Tim Fischer HP, Federal Leader of the National Party.

" Thailand has been 'to hell and back' this year on the political front; it is to be hoped that the worst is now behind and

peaceful democratic governance will now dominate.

I welcome the increased support for democratic parties and it would seem that the Democrat Party has won 79 seats and topped the poll.

The Democrat Party's Leader, Mr Chaun Leekpai is a good friend of Australia and earlier in the year he kindly hosted a lunch for me at the Democrat headquarters; in addition, one of his key offsiders is Dr Surin Pitsuwan who has visited Australia and,

also at my invitation, has visited Albury and Deniliquin in my electorate.

I might add that as one of the strongest supporters of the

Australian-Thailand bi-lateral relationship, it would be my wish that as soon as possible the Australia Thailand Friendship Group would be re-established both in Canberra and Bangkok."

ENDS 14 September 1992
