'AUNTY' ABC LIKE EVERYONE ELSE MOST WATCH HER WAIST LINE

The ABC would be best engaged in accepting the Coalition's

intention to cut the Corporation's funding by 10% and get on with it.

Federal Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer said this today when addressing a meeting of 'the friends of the A B C ' at Wagga Wagga.

"The Coalition is not using the cuts as a 'big stick approach' as it believes that most of what the ABC does is very worthwhile. It is simply asking that the ABC practice financial restraint like everyone else.

"It is not for me to say where the cuts should be made but

clearly the first approach should be to look at areas of

administrative duplication, or even where there are six examples around the states, rather than flogging an already stretched 'on air' contingent.

"I must admit that the ABC Television establishment appears a prime target for a 'little trimming' given the huge workforce and the amount of duplication and the amount of time devoted to ABC sourced productions other than relatively simple sporting event coverage.

"The most recent ABC Annual Report says that 44% of the ABC's total staffing is engaged with television. This compares with only 32% devoted to the widespread radio establishment.

"There are other examples of areas that should be assessed such as the ABC's presence in the Federal Parliament in Canberra. The telephone list says there are 58 working in the ABC's Canberra Bureau.

"This compares with the 51 combined total for TV networks 9, 10, 7 and Vic Tv plus Capital TV plus the radio networks of

Macquarie, Network Radio and 2 U E !"

Mr Fischer said times are tough, there is an urgent need to

return Australia to prosperity and the sooner all get down to taking practical steps to help, the sooner will economic recovery occur.
