Queensland Rail will benefit by some $24 million from the abolition of Diesel Fuel Excise Tax and $27 million from the abolition of Payroll Tax.

Federal Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer said this today when speaking at Toowoomba and chinchilla.

"The $51 million boost that Fightbackl will deliver to Queensland Rail will flow on to the regional and coastal economies through slashed transport costs.

"Under the GST Tax Reform Package, all diesel fuel excise tax will be abolished, all petrol fuel excise tax will be abolished and transport costs across Australia will be greatly reduced both for rail and road transport.

"The package puts the capital 'D' back into decentralisation and this is long overdue.

"Combined with the abolition of Sales Tax and Payroll Tax, in fact seven taxes in all, this will greatly ease the burden on the cost of shifting goods across Australia; it will also help farmers and small business operators even in survival mode.

"The slashing of fuel bills for rail transport is just one of the many positive features in the package with the total abolition of the diesel fuel excise. Whilst GST will apply to petrol and diesel where it is business input fuel, it will be fully


"There has been a huge and positive response in the bush to the GST package with people saying they had been given hope again and this reaction had come from as far afield as Normanton, Mt Isa, Birdsville and Roma and of course, right across the nation," Mr Fischer added.
