FISCHER SLAMS LABO RS DOUBLE STANDARDS

The Leader of the National Party, Mr Tim Fischer MP said today that Labor's brazen double standards in relation to the release of Tax Office records, are totally unacceptable.

"We all remember the daily revelations of the Fitzgerald Royal Commission established by the previous National Party Government which focussed heavily on the Queensland National Party.

"This process was assisted by the co-operation of the Federal Government in supplying confidential Tax Office records on proper requests by the Fitzgerald Royal Commission as is the case with the requests now coming from the WA Inc Royal Commission.

"Paul Keating and the Government must answer two questions: Firstly, why was this clear precedent not followed when the Western Australian Royal Commission sought Tax Office records in relation to WA Inc? Secondly, is there a cover up?

"I am furious about this issue and will be travelling to Queensland tomorrow to discuss this and other issues with Members of the Queensland Shadow Cabinet.

"Queensland's greatest Premier, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, has been hounded unmercifully by the media since the Fitzgerald Royal Commission and unsuccessfully prosecuted in the courts.

"I know many Queensland tempers are red hot over the appalling double standards of Labor and I will be aggressively pursuing Prime Minister Keating in the Parliament.

"Keating has much to answer for on this and many other issues," Mr Fischer concluded.
