MEDIA RELEASE 15 DECEMBER 1992

QUESTIONS BALDWIN MUST ANSWER

The misallocation of $26 million in university supplementation funds by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEBT) raises a number of serious questions that require an immediate response from the Minister, Mr Baldwin.

1. Why did DEBT not advise the universities that the funds - which were intended to cover wage increases flowing from award-restructuring - were included in other monies flowing to institutions?

2. Did DEBT in fact advise the universities that funds for this purpose would be distributed next year?

3. Does the Minister intend to make up the funding shortfall?

4. If so, where will the funds come and what effect will this have on other

Commonwealth programs for higher education?

5. If the Minister cannot guarantee to replace the "lost" funds, how does he expect the universities to cope with the shortfall? Will staff have to be dismissed?

Mr Baldwin should stop hiding in his Ministerial bunker and accept responsibility for this massive bungle.
