ALEXANDER DOWNER MEMBER FOR MAYO SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE

AUSTRALIAN PEACEKEEPERS IN SOMALIA

"The Coalition welcomes today's announcement that 30 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will join the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM).

"The Australian peacekeepers will be involved in co-ordinating the UN delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Somali people", said the Shadow Minister for Defence Alexander Downer.

"The desperate situation in Somalia is one which can only be alleviated through urgent international assistance.

"As such, the Australian participation in UNOSOM is one which demonstrates a long standing commitment to international humanitarian relief measures and to peacekeeping operations.

"In making this contribution to UNOSOM the Australian Defence Force is now committed to a wide range of peacekeeping operations in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

"Aside from the immediate and essential goal to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Somalia, the Coalition notes Senator Ray's statement that the UN presence will assist in accommodating the peace process in Somalia.

"The Coalition believes that the Government should outline a more detailed statement about the role the UNOSOM force will play towards achieving this wider goal.

"We have, in addition, serious concerns about the unstable military and political situation in Somalia. The situation will require very close monitoring by the Australian Government".

"The Coalition therefore believes that the Government should make a detailed public assessment available on the situation in Somalia and the range of threats presented to the Australian and other peacekeeping forces."
