SOMALIA

Australia should be prepared to commit a larger number of

personnel from the Defence Force to the relief operation in Somalia in view of the appalling situation developing in that country.

The Coalition supported the commitment made recently by the Government to send around 30 Defence personnel to Somalia. However, in the light of the United Nation's Security Council decision to step-up the UN relief operation, the Australian contribution should also be increased.

Television coverage coming out of Somalia is bringing home to Australians just how dreadful the situation is there. The only way to solve the problem of distributing food to Somalia's starving population will be through a massive, co-ordinated

international relief effort.

To support this humanitarian operation, Australia should significantly increase the number of Defence Force personnel committed to the relief effort.

Australia already has a large number of Defence Force

communications specialists on peacekeeping service, so it is unlikely that we could contribute a force of that type.

However, the Defence Force has many skills and capabilities which could contribute to the relief effort.

The Government should now be exploring all possible options for sending a large Australian contingent to the relief effort.
