TEENAGE JOBLESS HIT 28.6% IN THE TERRITORY

Teenage unemployment in the Northern Territory is running at an alarming 28.6 per cent, or four times the local unemployment average, Senator Grant Tambling, said today.

He was referring to figures published by the federal Department of Employment, Education and Training in its "Regional Labour Markets" brief, covering the three months to September 1992

"It is a disgrace that teeenage full-time unemployment in the Northern Territory is 28.6 per cent, or four times the local unemployment average of 7.3 per cent (for the three months to September).

"The Federal Government must make a concerted effort to boost growth and jobs in the north. Clearly, Labor's One Nation

strategy has failed and sunk without trace."

Senator Tambling said the Federal Labor Government's

preoccupation with political strategy had relegated unemployment to the bottom of the agenda.

"School and university leavers can take no comfort from Labor's federal policies, Their only hope rests in a change of government in 1993 to turn the economy around and lift job prospects.

"I know of many countries around the world that would be

embarrassed to claim an unemployment rate of 11,3 per cent yet here in Australia, the Labor Government accepts it as a fact of life."
