VIOLENCE ON TV

I have had further consultations with TV netw ork representatives and other interested groups today.

The TV netw orks will provide additional information tom orrow on financial im pacts. This m aterial is also to b e passed to the Prime Minister.

I note that the Anglican, Uniting and Catholic churches have all expressed public concern regarding violence on television and join the Leader of the O pposition and the Prime Minister on these issues.

The Australian Children's Foundation and the Australian Family Association have also expressed strong concern in similar term s.

The Coalition at its last full Party M eeting, on 10 N ovem ber, to o k the view that violence on television should b e limited so that children particularly, are protected.

A legislative response is one m ethod to address this concern to w hich the Coalition is attracted and w e will discuss again tom orrow , am ongst other options, as to how this m atter of acute com m unity concern is best addressed.
